Dance for PD® will be led by certified Dance for PD® instructor and Northern Virginia partner, Lucy Bowen McCauley.
Lucy is the Founding Artistic Director, choreographer, and creative energy behind Bowen McCauley Dance Co., founded in 1996, and leads Dance for PD classes at the Kennedy Center and George Mason University (see details below).
These Dance for PD® programs are offered at no cost to dancers thanks to the generosity of our Parkinson community.
About Dance for PD®
In Dance for PD® classes, people living with Parkinson’s and their families are invited to explore elements of different dance and movement styles with energizing and inspiring music as a guide. Anyone, at any level of ability and mobility, is welcome to participate in this award-winning, research-backed global program created and offered by the Mark Morris Dance Group. No dance experience is required.
The classes engage the participants’ minds and bodies, and create an enjoyable, social environment that emphasizes dancing rather than therapy. Active demonstration by professional dancers inspires participants to recapture grace, while guided improvisation fosters creativity, and experimentation with movement.
More than 40 peer reviewed scientific research studies conducted at a number of major university research centers around the world point to the benefits of dance for people with Parkinson’s. A number of leading neurologists and movement disorder specialists around the world include Dance for PD® classes among a shortlist of recommended activities for their patients.
