Genetic types of Parkinson’s Disease are fairly uncommon (estimated 10 to 15% of all cases). Those at higher risk of genetic Parkinson’s Disease include those with a direct family history, including siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, or grandparents. While having a genetic Parkinson’s Disease would not change how we manage your symptoms, it may be useful for family-planning and may help research studies.
PD-GENEration
A national initiative by the Parkinson’s Foundation offering genetic testing and counseling for people with Parkinson’s Disease. The program is free of charge for participants. Tests for genetic mutations in seven specific genes related to Parkinson’s Disease to help understand the genetic factors contribute.
How can it be helpful:
• Family Insight: Provides information on family risk.
• Research Advancement: Contributes to scientific research for better treatments and understanding of PD.
• Clinical Trials: Identifies eligibility for certain clinical trials.
How to register:
See their website or call the helpline to get registered today. Inova is not a clinic site for this study, but you can still participate at home.
