Evidence suggests that regular exercise that challenges you slows down the progression of Parkinson disease (PD), and it clearly improves quality of life. The optimal exercise routine includes a cardiovascular work out at least 3 days a week, stretching 5-7 days a week and strengthening at least 2 days a week. Walking (quickly) is an excellent routine for many, with the addition of shoulder range of motion exercises each morning. Swimming is also excellent, especially for those with arthritis.
We recommend seeing a physical therapist once a year or at least every other year, to develop a program is most beneficial and takes into consideration an individual’s medical conditions, lifestyle and preferences. The latter is especially important for older folks. One should start slow and build up.
The recommended type of exercise is an individual choice, because it must be a regimen that will be done regularly for it to be beneficial. Put it on your calendar and enlist a significant other or friend to join you. Remember your exercise is as important as everything else you do each day. In addition to regular exercise an active lifestyle is also vital. Pick activities that are fun, safe and challenging.
