A room full of caregivers on a beautiful Saturday morning says a lot about the care they want to provide…

Today several members of our Assisting Hands Home Care Arlington and Surrounding Areas team had the opportunity to attend an outstanding training hosted by the Inova Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center in collaboration with Heather Suri and Pathways in Aging.

The room was packed with caregivers from many different organizations that support and care for older adults. This was one of those sessions where I left knowing it would make a difference for the individuals and families we support that are living with Parkinson’s Disease.

The focus was on practical strategies caregivers can use when supporting individuals living with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders. We talked through common symptoms, communication tips, safety considerations, and ways to promote dignity and independence while still providing the right level of support. The information was clear, hands on, and immediately applicable.

I personally learned a great deal today. Even after years in home care, there is always more to understand about a disease as complex as Parkinson’s. The way symptoms show up, fluctuate, and impact daily life requires thoughtful, informed care. This training definitely helped our caregivers to feel more confident and better equipped in the home.

We are grateful to the team at Inova, especially Sonia Gow, for investing their time and expertise into educating our caregiver community.
